Erika Pieler

Erika Carola Pieler (* 1977 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist and lawyer . She was President of the Federal Monuments Office from January 1, 2019 to March 19, 2019 .

Life

Erika Pieler studied Classical Archeology and Law at the Universities of Vienna and Athens. Archaeological research projects took her to Turkey, Greece, Italy and Egypt. From September 2001 to December 2002 she was a research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens . In July 2006, she joined the Department of Monument Protection of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture as a lawyer and in 2008 took over the deputy head of this department as well as the management of the department for matters relating to the protection of cultural property, archaeological monuments and the export of cultural property. From 2014 to the end of 2018 she was a judge at the Federal Administrative Court, among other things, responsible for proceedings based on the Monument Protection Act.

On January 1, 2019, Erika Pieler took over the management of the Federal Monuments Office, succeeding Barbara Neubauer . On March 19, 2019, it was announced that Erika Pieler would resign from her position for personal reasons. At the beginning of June 2019, she was succeeded by Christoph Bazil as President of the Federal Monuments Office.
