Richard Potz

Richard Potz (born October 13, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian legal scholar. He is the head of the Institute for Legal Philosophy, Religious and Cultural Law at the University of Vienna .

Life

Potz studied law at the University of Vienna from 1961–1965, and was awarded a doctorate in 1965. iur. obtained his doctorate and habilitation in 1972 for canon law at the law faculty of his alma mater . Since 1978 Potz has been a board member of the Austrian Society for Church Law and the responsible editor and co-editor of the Austrian Archives for Law and Religion.

Positions

Potz has repeatedly spoken out against the legal preference given to religious over non-religious world views . This distinction in Austrian law is “simply not justified” and should be “repaired”. Potz pointed out that although only textbooks and teaching aids that do not contradict civic education may be used, this is a "norm without sanctions".
