Eriosyce engleri is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist Adolf Engler .

description

Eriosyce engleri grows with elongated shoots and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters with diameters of 14 to 18 centimeters. The roots are fibrous. There are 16 to 20 ribs that are notched. The thick, upwardly curved thorns are whitish or yellowish in the lower part of the shoots and brown to black in the upper part. The five to eight central spines are 4 to 7 inches long. The twelve to 20 radial spines are shorter than the central spines.

The funnel-shaped flowers are light lemon yellow and have a reddish central stripe. They are 5 to 6 inches long and 4 to 4.5 inches in diameter. The fruits are red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Eriosyce engleri is widespread in high mountains from Santiago de Chile to the Chilean region of Valparaíso . It was first described as Horridocactus engleri in 1959 by Friedrich Ritter . Fred Kattermann placed them in the genus Eriosyce in 1994 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
