Eriosyce vertongenii is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Belgian cactus connoisseur Herman Vertongen.

description

Eriosyce vertongenii grows individually with flattened to somewhat spherical, greenish-brown shoots and reaches heights of up to 3.5 centimeters with a diameter of 5.5 centimeters. The roots are fibrous. There are eight to 13 ribs that appear as rounded cusps. The areoles on it are oval. There can be a single central spine . The five to nine strong, needle-like radial spines have a darker tip. They are slightly protruding, slightly curved and up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, light yellow to salmon-colored flowers appear from young areoles, are up to 4 centimeters long and have the same diameter. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with long, fluffy wool. The elongated fruits are dry and open with a basal pore.

Distribution and systematics

Eriosyce vertongenii is common in the Argentine province of San Juan . It was first described as Pyrrhocactus vertongenii in 1995 by Jacques G. Lambert . David Richard Hunt placed it in 1997 in the genus Eriosyce .
