Eriska is an island in the Scottish council area Argyll and Bute . It is located at the confluence of the Loch Creran tributary in the Loch Linnhe . In a broader definition, it is sometimes included in the Inner Hebrides . It is not to be confused with the island of Eriskay , which is part of the Outer Hebrides .

geography

The island marks the entrance to Loch Creran. It has a length of about 1.8 km with a maximum width of about 900 m. The highest point measures 47 m. In the south, at high tide, an approximately 100 m wide waterway separates it from the Scottish mainland at Benderloch . At low tide , however, it falls dry, so that Eriska is a tidal island . The Lynn of Lorne separates Eriska from Lismore Island to the west . To the east, in Loch Creran, lies the little Sgeir Caillich .

colonization

Eriska Hotel (2007)

The historical settlement of Eriska can be traced back a long time. The Eriska Crannóg, for example, testifies to this . In the 2011 census, the population of Eriska is not explicitly shown in the table of islands, although their size justifies a listing. It may have been ignored as a tidal island or because of the road bridge. On the island there is the mansion Eriska House that the Clan Stewart was built there in the 1880s. Today it houses a hotel, which is why at least a temporary settlement can be assumed.
