Eger wine-growing region

The Egri Bikavér is a Hungarian wine. In German-speaking countries it is sold as the Erlauer bull's blood .

The Egri Bikavér is produced in the northern Hungarian wine-growing region of Eger . It is a blend of at least three types of red wine. The carrier variety was originally the kadarka , which was sometimes problematic in cultivation and vinification , and was blended with wines made from Blauer Portugieser , Merlot , Kékfrankos and Cabernet . Often, vineyards were planted together with these vines, and the grapes thus formed a natural blend, the so-called mixed set . Today the Kékfrankos is the base wine, while wines from Kadarka have taken a back seat.

The low-acid, deeply dark, full red wine is matured in old oak barrels and matures for at least two years before bottling.

Good compositions can be of great quality. However, relatively average bulk wines are often sold under this brand name .

In addition to Eger, a cuvée called Bikavér is also made in the Hungarian wine-growing region of Szekszárd .

Legend

A legend , according to the defenders of Eger drank their native wine, to enhance their fighting spirit and morale. However, when Ottoman besiegers saw the red-tinted beards of the defenders, they believed that the onlookers had drank the blood of bulls in order to acquire their ferocity and fighting strength, and eventually withdrew as they had been demoralized by this impression. The legend is wonderful, but it was invented by the poet Géza Gárdonyi. The poet Géza Gárdonyi (née Ziegler) came from the village of Gárdony on Lake Velence in the Szekszárd wine-growing region, where bull blood wine had long been common. When Gárdonyi moved to Eger, he invented the fairy tale about bull's blood wine from Eger, which was to play a role in a famous battle in 1552 in the armed conflict against the Turks. It was only when his book was published in 1899 that it turned out that bull blood wine was not known in Eger at all. In Eger that didn't matter, society was happy to include him in its ranks - and has been advertising bull blood wine from Eger for many decades so much that in Hungary outside of Szekszárd you can only hear about bull blood wine in the last 2-3 decades .
