Ernest André (Lepidopterist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernest André (born 1863 or 1864; died January 14, 1911 in Mâcon , Saône-et-Loire department ) was a French entomologist who researched peacock moths and silk making.

Life

Ernest André grew up as the son of the post office clerk Jacques André, who was a member of the Académie de Mâcon and invented telegraph technology. However, a telegraph developed by him found no interest from his employer. Ernest André, like his father, worked for the telegraph directorate. He suffered from heart disease, diagnosed around 1890, which eventually caused his early death.

research

From 1896 Ernest André was a member of the Académie de Mâcon, the local learned society . He dealt with the rearing of rare insects, namely native and exotic silk spiders , conducted behavioral studies in this context, and examined the possibilities of economic use of various species in silk production .

André was the founder and president of the Société d'histoire naturelle de Mâcon, member for life of the Société d'histoire naturelle d'Autun and secretary of the Société des amis des sciences de Mâcon.

André owned an important collection of around 200 species of peacock moth in different stages of development. This also included samples of the silk obtained from the spinners, which André used to assess the quality of the material and its suitability for economic use.
