Ernestina Karman

Ernestina Sanná Karman (* 1915 in Santos , Brazil ; † 2004 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian painter , draftsman , sculptor , journalist, art critic and teacher.

life and work

Karman studied in São Paulo from 1930 to 1933 drawing with Lucília Fraga and painting with Collete Pujol . In 1934 she completed her studies in psychology and education and was in the public service in Campo Grande , Mato Grosso from 1946 to 1954 . From 1954 to 1956 she painted with Colette Pujol (1913–1999) and listened to art history with the art historian Wolfgang Pfeiffer at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo. She worked at Samson Flexor from 1955 to 1957 in the Atelier Abstração. In 1960 she studied woodcut with Maria Bonomi and metal engraving with Livy Abramo . From 1976 to 1978 she wrote for the newspaper Folha da Tarde. She was elected President of the São Paulo Art Critics Association (APCA, Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte ) and Vice President of the São Paulo Biennale . She was a professor of Brazilian art at the Paço das Artes in São Paulo. In the 1980s she was a member of the board of directors of the Department of Art of São Paulo. She took part in the Biennials VII and VIII of São Paulo with her works.
