Choir story

The choir was formed after a suggestion by the singer-songwriter Reinhold Andert (* 1944) when the veterans present enthusiastically sang old songs from the labor movement at a performance by the October Club in 1973 . It was founded on April 18, 1973 with 50 singers as a choir of Berlin party veterans , at that time with the approval and support of the Berlin district leadership of the SED . The choir made its first appearance on July 22, 1973 at a kick-off event for the 1973 World Festival of Youth and Students in the Kosmos cinema in Berlin under its director Walter Riedel (1902–1978).

The choir took the name of the singer and actor Ernst Busch (1900–1980) in 1983, three years after the artist's death. In the course of the 1980s the number of members rose to 65. From its inception to 1988, the choir sang 340 times in front of an estimated 25,000 listeners. One of the highlights was an appearance at the Festival of Political Song on February 11, 1985, together with the actor Erwin Geschonneck and the singers Lin Jaldati and Jürgen Walter .

With the foreseeable end of the GDR , the choir was renamed the Ernst Busch Veterans Choir in February 1990, and in April 1990 adopted a democratic statute and was registered as an association . In April 1991 the name Ernst-Busch-Chor Berlin was adopted. On May 3, 1992, the first concert in unified Germany took place in Berlin-Hellersdorf . In 1997, 113 songs were part of the permanent repertoire, 37 of which were political, 40 folk songs, 17 art songs and 14 from other genres . Since 1995, the concert for Ernst Busch's birthday has been the annual highlight of the choir in January. This has been taking place in the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin-Mitte since 2008 , is performed twice and is always sold out.
