Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower

The Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower is an observation tower and memorial for Ernst Moritz Arndt . It stands on the Rugard northeast of Bergen on Rügen . The brick- built tower was included in the list of architectural monuments of the then Rügen district .

Emergence

In preparation for Ernst Moritz Arndt's 100th birthday, a “committee for the erection of an Arndt monument” was formed in 1869 under the leadership of the Rügen District Administrator von Platen and the Mayor of Bergen Richter. The German public called for donations and the architects were asked for designs. The foundation stone was laid on December 26, 1869, the anniversary day. The design of the Royal Government Building Supervisor Hermann Eggert from Berlin, who was in charge of the building from start to finish, was selected. In the summer of 1872 the 13-foot rock foundation of the tower was laid and the earth was poured in the following winter. The first floor was built in 1873. After that, the financial means ran out for the time being. There were again appeals for donations, with Kaiser Wilhelm I also providing 3,000 marks. It was not until 1875 that the second floor and the inner staircase could be built. In 1876 the third floor and the dome followed, so that the topping-out ceremony could be celebrated on October 6th of that year. The 26.7 m high monument was completed in 1877.

use

The tower served as a viewing tower for locals and guests. In 1944 the once tiled dome was removed and a flak position was installed. From 1945 to 1953 the tower was used by the Red Army . In 1955 the platform was torn down and replaced with a new wooden dome.

Redevelopment

In 1999 the city ordinance of the city of Bergen auf Rügen decided to renovate the tower and to enable the originally possible all-round view by building a glass dome. The renovation was carried out from 2000 to 2002 at a total cost of around DM 1.1 million. On the 125th anniversary of its construction, it was made accessible to visitors again.

architecture

The four-story round brick lookout tower is located on a horticultural hill with an outside staircase. The projecting basement level with a circumferential gallery is divided into segmented arched niches, the second floor is illuminated by high arched windows, which on the third floor become arched arcades of a covered gallery. The fourth floor with its cast iron spiral staircase and viewing gallery has a glass domed roof.
