Ernst David founded a workshop for brass instruments in Bielefeld in 1885.

In 1895/96 at the Bielefeld District Court, he registered designs for "a flugelhorn with a modified voice slide device" and for "a slide trombone" under the numbers 241 and 245. In 1901 E. David extended the term of protection of the utility model for a Contra-B slide trombone, among other things. Together with the Markneukirchen manufacturer August Heinel Jr., Ernst David had a "Contra-C or B-bass trombone with cylinder, pump / perinet valves" registered as a utility model at the Bielefeld District Court on July 25, 1903 under the number 208419.

In 1909 Johannes Kuhlo recommended a trombone made by him . The two teams worked together to create the Kuhlohorn , an oval flugelhorn with rotary valves. The Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg owns a total of five wind instruments from the "Ernst David" workshop from around 1900 to 1935. Three of these are known as the Kuhlo horn.

On Easter 1910 the "brass instrument manufacturing and music shop" Ernst David celebrated its 25th anniversary.

In 1918 his son Albert (1891–1944) took over the company, his daughter Anna Crépin was managing director. In autumn 1934 Albert David was appointed head master of the Bielefeld organ building and musical instrument guild. In the same year his patent was accepted under the number (D) # 629773.

In 1945 the company in Bielefeld went out.
