Ernst J. Grube

Ernst J. Grube (born May 9, 1932 in Kufstein , Austria ; † June 12, 2011 in London ) was a German art historian and author .

Life

His German parents moved with him to Berlin, where he attended the Schiller-Gymnasium. Grube studied at the Free University of Berlin . After his studies he got a job at the library of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , where he then became Ernst Kühnel's assistant . During those years his interest in Islamic art awoke, which accompanied him in his further life. In 1958 he moved to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was directed by James Rorimer in those years . Starting in 1968, Grube was the first curator of the Islamic Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In the following years he played a key role in expanding the Islamic Collection. In 1968 he became a professor at Hunter College at the City University of New York . In 1972 he moved to Italy and taught in Padua and Naples. From 1977 to 1988 he taught as a professor at the University of Venice . In 1958, Grube was married to Alberta Fabris in his first marriage. In his second marriage he married the art historian Eleanor Sims.
