reception

Liebenauer made oil paintings , gouaches , watercolors and graphics . His preferred subjects were landscapes, flowers, portraits and mythical scenes. A number of military subjects also date from the time of the First World War . Liebenauer was also a sought-after book illustrator, especially books for children and young people, fairy tales and legends, and adventure literature. Among other things, he worked for the Gerlach & Wiedling publishing house , which was known for its artistically sophisticated illustrations. B. Gustav Klimt and Kolo Moser have also drawn. Liebenauer's style of painting is naturalistic. His legends and fairytale pictures have a folk and poetic expressiveness. In the illustrations made for Gerlach & Wiedling there are echoes of Art Nouveau. Liebenauer's works are signed differently: with “Liebenauer”, with “E. Liebenauer ”or with“ EL ”. In most cases he did not add the year to the signature.
