life and work

education

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart and doing military service during the First World War , Ernst Mahle initially worked for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft after the war. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart and became an assistant in their material testing institute with Carl v. Brook.

Start at Hirth

In 1922, Ernst Mahle moved to Versuchsbau Hellmuth Hirth , later the Mahle Group, in which his brother Hermann Mahle had been the commercial director since December 1920. While Hermann Mahle was mainly responsible for the commercial area, Ernst Mahle took on more product development, especially when it came to the development of light metal pistons. Pistons quickly became Mahle's most important product. The invention of the patented ring carrier piston in 1931, which had a long service life and was particularly important for the further improvement of the diesel engine , was of great importance here . In 1933 the two brothers became the sole shareholders of the company, which from 1938 also operated under the name Mahle KG.

post war period

After 1945, both brothers continued to run the company with its plants. New developments were initiated and plants set up abroad, for example in South America . In 1964, Hermann and Ernst Mahle transferred the eight plants in their company with 7,000 employees to a non-profit foundation. In 1971 the brothers left the management. While Hermann Mahle passed away that same year, Ernst Mahle remained with the company as honorary chairman until he died on September 8, 1983.

Awards

Ernst Mahle was awarded the VDI Honor Ring (1934) and the Diesel Medal in Gold (1967) , among others . He was also Dr.-Ing. E. h. of the TH Karlsruhe (1957).
