Ernst Ruch (born August 26, 1919 in Munich ; † May 11, 2015 ) was a German theoretical chemist and physicist who taught as a professor of quantum chemistry at the Free University of Berlin .

Ruch obtained his diploma in physics at the TH Munich in 1945 and was there assistant to the mathematician Josef Lense . In 1949 he received his doctorate at the TH Munich and in 1955 he completed his habilitation with Günter Scheibe (1893–1980) with On the question of binding in cyclopentadienyl metal complexes and became a private lecturer.

In 1961 he became associate professor at the TH Munich and in 1966 professor for quantum chemistry at the FU Berlin .

In 1987 he retired. He lived in Schliersee .

He dealt with theoretical chemistry, quantum chemistry, optical activity, chirality and metallocenes.

With Ivar Ugi he developed a theory of stereoselective reactions.

In 1980 he received the Liebig Memorial Medal and in 1960 the Nernst Haber Bodenstein Prize.
