Ernst Schüler (born October 29, 1807 in Darmstadt ; † May 12, 1881 in Biel ) was a German-Swiss revolutionary, teacher, publisher, journalist and politician.

Life

Ernst Schüler began studying theology, philology and philosophy at the Hessian Ludwig University in 1827 . In the same year he became a member of the Corps Starkenburgia . After his participation in the Frankfurt Wachensturm he had to flee Germany in 1833 and settled in Biel as a high school teacher . Here he also participated in the founding of a craft reading association. In 1834, Schüler was one of the founders of the Young Germany Association and in 1835 one of the co-founders of Young Switzerland . He became head of the printing works of the same name and was responsible for the publication of the bilingual magazine Junge Schweiz from 1835 to 1836 . In 1836 he became a member of the Swiss National Association. He was arrested for his journalistic activities and charged with high treason. Despite being acquitted, he still lost his teaching post.

As a liberal, he became a local councilor in Biel in 1845 and postmaster in 1846. As a volunteer he took part in the First Freischarenzug in 1845 and in the Sonderbund War in 1847 . In 1848 he was editor of the newspaper Die Evolution . From 1849 to 1851 he lived in Wiesbaden. When he returned to Biel, he took over a printing company there in 1852, which his son continued to run after his death, and founded the Schweizer Handelscourier

Schüler is considered a pioneer of the Biel watch industry since he set up a watch workshop there from 1840 to 1846 and made a political contribution to the watch industry there. He also made a contribution to the wood carving there.
