Ernst Schiffmann (born December 24, 1883 in Gößnitz , † January 11, 1953 in Gladbeck ) was known in the Ruhr area and Münsterland as the gymnastics father .

Life

Ernst Schiffmann was born on December 24, 1883 in Gößnitz in Thuringia, the second of nine children of the teacher and Kirchner Robert Schiffmann. After school he attended the technical center in Altenburg and became an electrical engineer . For professional reasons he moved to the Ruhr area in Gladbeck, where he became the electrical operator at the Zweckel colliery . He later worked as an electrical operator at the Scholven colliery and was largely responsible for the construction and maintenance of the hydrogenation plant there.

Ernst Schiffmann had four children with his wife Marie (born 1887): Ernst (who died as a child), Irmgard, Fritz and Walter. The family initially lived on Potsdamer Strasse, and later on Grüner Weg. After the Second World War , Ernst Schiffmann became a city ​​councilor for Gladbeck .

He was also the first chairman of the Gladbeck gymnastics club for many years and chairman of the Westphalian Gymnastics Association for a time.

Commemoration

There is a memorial stone in the Wittringer Forest in Gladbeck . On the boulder it says: "To the gymnast Ernst Schiffmann", plus the gymnast's cross with the motto "Fresh, pious, happy, free" .

In honor of the gymnastics father, the "Ernst-Schiffmann-Treffen Münsterland" was held regularly by the Münsterländer Turngau, of which Schiffmann has been an honorary member since then.
