Ernst Schmidheiny (born July 16, 1902 in Heerbrugg ; † March 2, 1985 in Céligny ) was a Swiss industrialist and founder of the Ernst Schmidheiny Foundation .

Life

Ernst Schmidheiny was born in Heerbrugg Castle as the son of Ernst Schmidheiny (industrialist, 1871) and Vera Kuster, daughter of Anton, banker. His brother is Max Schmidheiny and his uncle is Jacob Schmidheiny . He attended the Neuchâtel business school and completed an internship at the Holderbank cement factory . In 1925 he married Anna Maria Gygi, she is the daughter of Adolf Louis Gygi. He married his second wife in 1936, she is the daughter of Johann Eduard Emil. In 1940 he moved to Céligny to protect the company's interests.

He was the technical director of the Holderbank cement factory in 1924. Schmidheiny was a delegate of Holderbank Financière Glarus AG . From 1932 to 1942 he was deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Eternit Germany. Schmidheiny and his brother Max Schmidheiny took over the management of the father's in 1935 , primarily as president of the Aargau Portland cement factory Holderbank-Wildegg AG. He also worked on the management levels of Wild-Heerbrugg AG and Eternit AG Niederurnen. In the same year he became President of Eternit AG in Niederurnen. In the same year he was also a delegate of the Portland cement factory Holderbank-Wildegg AG . In 1942 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Bank Corporation. He was on the Board of Directors of Swissair from 1947 to 1974. In the same year he became President of Portlandcementfabrik Holderbank-Wildegg AG , from 1958 to 1965 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors. He took on this position at Holderbank Financière Glarus AG from 1955 to 1974. In 1972 he set up the Ernst Schmidheiny Foundation to promote the interests of the free market economy .
