Erol Dora

Erol Dora (born February 2, 1964 in Silopi , Şırnak ) is an ethnic Assyrian politician, lawyer and the first Christian member of the Turkish parliament since the 1960s. He is a member of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch .

Life

Dora was born in the village of Hessana in what was then the province of Mardin (now Şırnak) and attended elementary and middle school and high school in Istanbul. He studied law in Ankara and worked as a lawyer until 2011. For the parliamentary elections on June 12, 2011 , he ran as an independent candidate for the province of Mardin. He was supported by the Party of Peace and Democracy (BDP) and joined this after receiving the direct mandate. Later, almost all members of the BDP joined the Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP). For the general election in November 2015 , Dora ran for the HDP in the province of Mardin and won.

Dora is married and has three children. In addition to his native Aramaic , he speaks Turkish and Kurdish as well as some English and Armenian .
