The First Royal Castle; Otto's first Athens residence, now part of the city museum

The First Royal Palace of Athens, at 7 Paparregopoulou Street on Klauthmonosplatz, was the first property of the royal couple Otto König of Greece and Amalie Queen of Greece and served as an interim palace until the completion of the Old Athens Palace in 1847, today's Greek Parliament . A previous building was expanded in a representative way around 1800 by the German architects Lüders and Hoffer. Its exterior is characterized by a tiled roof, a facade with pilasters and some balconies. Inside the palace are the private apartments of the royal couple, as well as the throne room of King Otto I. The walls are in ocher and blue, often framed by flower friezes . There is a garden behind the castle.

The original building once belonged to the businessman Dekosis-Bouros. After moving the Greek capital from Nauplion to Athens , he rented the building to the king for 7,000 drachmas a year. In 1859 the castle was united with its neo-classical building by a closed "bridge".

Today both buildings serve as the seat of the 'Museum of the City of Athens', with the castle section containing an exhibition on the theme of 'Former Castle'.
