Ertwin Ertman (* 1430 ; † 1505 ) was a councilor and from 1477 first mayor of his hometown Osnabrück .

Life

Born as the son of poor parents, his talent was recognized early and he was given the opportunity to study law in Erfurt.

At a young age he was elected to the City Council of Osnabrück. Here he performed important diplomatic services through his cunning, his eloquence and, above all, his knowledge of the law. Among other things, he succeeded in having the imperial ban imposed by the emperor lifted in 1468.

In 1470 he received a letter of arms in recognition of his services .

In addition, Ertman was an advisor to many princes and rulers.

From 1477 to 1504 he held the office of mayor and successfully built the town hall, which still exists today. With his "Osnabrück Bishop Chronicle" he was one of the first chroniclers of the city of Osnabrück.

His proximity to the church brought him the charge of favoring the clergy.

After his death in 1505 he was buried in the chapel of the Barefoot Monastery. His tombstone is lost today.

Ertman's former residence now houses the conservatory.
