Ervilia castanea is a mussel from the family of pepper shells (Semelidae). It occurs in the North Atlantic.

features

The flattened, equal-folding housing is up to 15 millimeters long. It is oblong-egg-shaped in outline and has a width-to-height ratio of about 1.7. It is unequal, the vertebrae are in front of the midline (in relation to the length of the case). The posterior dorsal margin is almost straight and slopes gently towards the tightly rounded posterior end. The almost straight to very slightly arched anterior dorsal margin is shorter than the posterior dorsal margin, and slopes more steeply to the somewhat broader rounded anterior end. The ventral margin is well arched. The ligament lies inside and outside. The outer ligament is a very small, brown band behind the vertebrae. The inner ligament sits in an elongated triangular chondrophore . In the left flap the lock has two cardinal teeth and a very weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. In the right valve there are also two cardinal teeth and a weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. The posterior cardinal tooth is significantly larger than the anterior cardinal tooth. There are two sphincters. The jacket bay is deep and almost reaches the center line of the case. The ventral part of the indentation is fused with the outer surface line.

The purple-brown shell with radial rays is thin-walled but firm. There are fine concentric and very fine radial lines on the surface that create a reticulated pattern. The stages of growth are clearly marked by irregularities in the ornamentation. The color varies from The periostracum is a very thin, beige, shiny coating. The inner edge of the case is smooth.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends from the southwest coast of the British Isles and the English Channel to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea . It has also been found in the coastal waters of the Azores , Madeira and the Canary Islands . It lives in the depth range from about 30 meters to 110 meters water depth.

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 1803 by George Montagu under the binomial Donax castaneus . The species has already been placed in the (sub) genera Amphidesma , Capsa , Donax , Erycina and Venus . MolluscaBase classifies them in the genus Ervilia Turton, 1822.
