Erythrodiplax amazonica is a species of dragonfly from the subfamily Sympetrinae . It was described by Sjöstedt in 1918. Since Borror's description in 1942, a distinction has been made between the two subspecies E. amazonica amazonica and E. amazonica melanica . While E. amazonica amazonica is widespreadin the entire Amazon region, E. amazonica melanica occurs only in a few places in the Amazon region. The type epithet amazonica refers to the distribution area; the part of the name melanica refers to melanism , i.e. the dark color.

features

The abdomen in the males between 16.5 and 18.5 millimeters and in the females 16.5 to 17.5 millimeters long is bright reddish brown in color in E. amazonica amazonica . In females, there is also a yellow-brown stripe dorsally over the abdomen. In E. amazonica melanica, on the other hand, the abdomen, like the rest of the body, is bluish black. This color difference defines and enables a distinction between the otherwise identical subspecies. The dorsal part of the thorax of E. amazonica amazonica is slightly darker than the abdomen. The humeral and lateral parts are shimmering red and black. The hind wings are between 22 and 23 millimeters long. In addition, like the forewings, they have a brown spot at the base. In males, this extends in the forewing to the level of the first antenodal artery . It is slightly larger on the hind wings. In females, on the other hand, it is more extensive than that of the male in both pairs of wings, and it is also lighter. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is between 2 and 2.3 millimeters long.
