The escalpelamento is the peeling of the scalp from the skull , in most cases by boat engines .

Emergence

The escalpelamento is a common problem in the Amazon . Distraction and poor safety standards on the Voadeiras, typical boats for traveling and working on the Amazon river, are the reasons for the many victims.

The Ribeirinhos are one of the traditional peoples of South America who live near rivers. They feed on fishing and agriculture . These people are the main victims of scalping . When victims approach a boat's engine to do work, their hair is pulled. The rapid rotation of the motor then winds the hair up. The scalp is pulled from the skull, along with ears, eyebrows, and part of the skin of the face and neck. This type of accident leads, if not to death, to severe disfigurement, the healing of which is long and painful.

Social measures

On January 14, 2010, the President of Brazil , Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , declared August 28 a national holiday for the control and prevention of Escalpelamento by federal law 12.199/2010 (pt. Dia Nacional de Combate e Prevenção ao Escalpelamento ).

On January 20, 2011, in Bélem , the capital of the state of Pará , the first non-governmental organization was created to provide psychological support and reintegration into society and the labor market after surgery and healing.
