The boat engine is the propulsion engine of a boat . On sailing boats , an additional motor can serve as an auxiliary motor for port maneuvers and to bridge slacks .

Boats can be equipped with one or more outboard motors or with inboard motors. In internal engines which is torque either directly via a straight propeller shaft (rigid shaft), a propeller shaft with deflection (Y-drive) or an outboard underwater part (Z drive) to the propeller transmitted. Gasoline or diesel fuel are used as fuels . Gas engines and electric motors are also occasionally used.
