Eublemma ostrinum (incorrectly also Eublemma ostrina ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae). The common names Brownish Kratzdisteleule , Purpur-Kratzdisteleulchen or Southern Sandstrohblumeneulchen are rarely used.

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 16 to 24 millimeters. This makes them one of the smaller owl butterflies. They are characterized by an extremely wide range of colors. The color scale of the front wings ranges from ocher yellow to dark rust red or brown purple. The root field is always lighter in color. The irregularly jagged wavy line is laid out in white. The kidney defect is reduced to a small black point. Cross lines as well as tenon and ring flaws are missing. The middle shadow and apex region are sometimes darkened. The hind wings, which are almost without drawings, have a gray-brown tint. The fringes of the front wings are brownish, those of the hind wings are whitish.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are colored yellow-gray, have pale yellow, interrupted back and side ridge lines, as well as colored side stripes and point warts that are provided with light gray hair. The head and pronotum are dark brown.

Similar species

Within the genus Eublemma there are species whose moths are similar in color to Eublemma ostrinum , for example Eublemma parvum , which, however, is smaller and usually lighter in color and shows transverse lines. In cases of doubt, specialists should be consulted for a reliable determination.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Eublemma ostrinum occurs in the entire Mediterranean area and is only found sporadically in Central Europe. To the east the distribution area extends to southern Russia , Asia Minor and Afghanistan . Occasional finds in Northern Europe, such as in Great Britain in 1992 , are likely to be migrant butterflies . Eublemma ostrinum can be found in warm, dry places.

Way of life

The main flight time for the moths is from June to August. In climatically very favorable areas they can be found from April to October, which speaks for the formation of at least two generations. Gold thistle ( Carlina ) and everlasting flower species ( Helichrysum ) are given as food plants for the caterpillars .

Danger

Eublemma ostrinum is considered to be threatened with extinction in Bavaria . If butterflies appear in other German federal states, they are regarded as migrant butterflies or irregular visitors.
