The Escola Secundária Francisco Manyanga , in German "Secondary School Francisco Manyanga", is a secondary school in the Alto-Maé district of the Mozambican capital Maputo . The school opened in 1962 and was initially called Liceu António Enes . Since 1976 it has been named after the Mozambican resistance fighter Francisco Manyanga . It is located on Avenida Mohamed Siad Barre .

history

The institution itself was founded in the mid-1950s under the name "Liceu António Enes" (LAE) by the colonial city administration. It initially belonged organizationally to the Liceu Salazar and was temporarily housed in the Clube 1º de Maio .

On behalf of the colonial administration - in the course of the urbanization efforts of Portuguese East Africa by the Gabinete de Urbanização do Ultramar - the architects Lucínio Cruz and Eurico Pinto Lopes designed the building for the new school in 1956. A site on Avenida Paiva de Andrada 68 (today Avenida Mohamed Siad Barré 68) was selected as the new location. The architects designed a strictly symmetrical, three-story building with a monumental, modernist entrance. Two wings with open side balconies lead away from the entrance. The architect Fernando Mesquita accompanied the construction in the city administration . Construction work lasted four years, and school operations began in 1961. The official inauguration took place on May 28, 1962 by Governor Sarmento Rodrigues .

Schools continued to operate even in the course of Mozambique's independence - in 1976, however, it was given a new name. Since then it has been named after the Mozambican resistance fighter Francisco Manyanga ( Escola Secundária Francisco Manyanga ). Today the school is one of the largest state secondary schools in Mozambique and has above-average facilities. Between 7000 and 7500 students are enrolled at the school, more than half of them (at least 3850) are female. For reasons of space and time, lessons are therefore held in three rounds (morning, afternoon, evening). 185 teachers work at the school.

The school has been run by Orlando Dima for more than ten years.
