Eskandar Abadi

Eskandar Abadi (* 1959 in Bandar Mahshahr , Iran) is an Iranian-German journalist, translator and musician.

Life

Childhood and youth

Abadi was born in Bandar Mahshahr, Iran, in 1959, to a housewife and an employee of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company . He was blind from birth. He spent the first years of his life in Bandar Mahshahr before his family moved to Isfahan , where he and his sister could attend a school for the blind. Abadi first attended the Nur Ayin School in Isfahan, an institution run by British Christian missionaries, and later moved to the Christoffel home for the blind, which Ernst Christoffel founded in 1928. There he learned Braille , at the same time attended a regular school and passed the regular Abitur examination for sighted people. In 1979, Abadi passed the national entrance examination for state universities and received a place at the law and political science faculty. He studied constitutional law for two semesters before the Iranian universities were closed in the wake of the cultural revolution . After an unsuccessful attempt to emigrate to England, which ended in rejection at the border, Abadi left Iran and went to Germany.

Islamic Revolution

In the late 1970s, Abadi was involved, first as a pupil and then as a student, in activities by left-wing opposition members against the Shah's regime. He distributed leaflets and organized secret meetings where banned books were read and discussed, and benefited from the fact that security forces and intelligence officials did not target him as a potential subversive because of his blindness. After the Islamic Revolution, he expanded his political activities and performed musically for the left opposition at lectures and demonstrations. In this context, he said he was subjected to reprisals.

Emigration to Germany

In 1980 Abadi traveled to Germany by land with the help of a German friend from Christoffelheim. There he first attended German courses in Frankfurt and after six months passed the external examination for university entrance qualification.

Studied in Marburg

In 1981 he began studying political science at the Philipps University in Marburg , which he graduated with a diploma in 1985. He then began a doctorate in German with the linguist Rudolf Freudenberg and received his doctorate with a thesis on “Narrator Profile and Narrative Technique in the Novel 'The Magic Mountain'”. His dissertation was published in the series “Marburg Studies on Linguistics” at Lit-Verlag in Münster. Abadi then taught German as a foreign language and social studies as a tutor and lecturer at the preparatory college in Marburg, which was affiliated with the Philipps University. In 2002 he moved with his family to Cologne and has since worked as an editor for the Persian program of Deutsche Welle "DW Farsi".

Private life

Abadi is married and has one daughter. In 2001 he received German citizenship.

As a small child Abadi performed as a singer at public events in his hometown, at the age of twelve he began to learn the violin, and at 14 he passed an entrance exam for the local radio station "Radio Esfahan" in central Iran. There he worked as a violinist in the radio orchestra for five years and performed with the ensemble at official events and regular radio concerts. In addition to the violin, Abadi plays the Persian goblet drum tonbak and regularly performs in public with his own compositions and arrangements of well-known Persian pieces.

Translators and interpreters

Abadi is a state-certified and authorized translator of the OLG Cologne and a sworn interpreter of the LG Cologne for the Persian language. He grew up with Persian as his mother tongue and speaks fluent German and English. In addition to his work as a court interpreter and sworn translator, Abadi has translated numerous literary works from German into Persian. Most recently he published “Through the eyes of the blind” (Az chashm-e nabinayan) (Nashr-e Mahi, Tehran 2017), a collection of texts about blindness and the blind (“ Letter about the blind for use by the sighted ” by Denis Diderot, “ Pastoral Symphony ” by André Gide and “ Blindensturz ” by Gert Hofmann).

In 2002 Abadi began working as a radio editor for the Persian-language program of Deutsche Welle (DW Farsi). There he produced and moderated various political and cultural formats such as “Europamagazin”, “Deutschlandmagazin”, “Klangpunkte” and “Aphorisms and Satire of the Week”. After retiring from DW Farsi's linear radio program in 2011, Abadi turned to producing web content and podcasts. One of the most popular formats he moderated is the program “Rare Sounds from Yesterday to Today” (Ava-ha-ye kam-shenide az diruz ta emruz, together with Mitra Khalatbari).
