Eskil Magnusson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eskil Magnusson (* around 1175 , † around 1227 ) was a Swedish nobleman , judge (lagman) and diplomat . He gave instructions for the drafting of the Västgötalagen law , the oldest document in Swedish that has survived in its entirety. One of his half-brothers was Birger Jarl .

Eskil Magnusson's father, Magnus Minnesköld , was the progenitor of the Folkung dynasty . In a letter from Knut I , Eskil is first mentioned in a document as the companion of his father. In 1217 he married Kristina Nilsdotter, a granddaughter of Erik IX. the saint and widow of the Norwegian Jarl Håkon Galen . Through this connection Eskil became the stepfather of Knut Håkonsson , who later became acquainted as the Norwegian rival king. However, the available scriptures do not provide any information about the extent to which Eskil assisted his stepson.

His diplomatic activities as a mediator between the Norwegian King Håkon IV and the court of the underage Swedish King Erik XI are documented.

Eskil Magnusson is assigned the role of an advocate of peaceful relations between Sweden and Norway in the Håkon-Håkonssons saga . It is not entirely out of the question that Snorri Sturluson transferred some of Eskil's character traits to his hero Røgnvald Eysteinsson . Snorri and Eskil had met in Norway in 1219.
