The Esplanade (full name: Esplanade - Theaters on the Bay ) is a cultural center in Singapore , consisting of a concert hall with around 1600 seats and a theater for around 2000 spectators. It is located at the mouth of the Singapore River in Marina Bay and, in addition to its central location, is also a tourist attraction due to its shape, which resembles a durian .

History and architecture

The idea of a modern cultural center arose as early as 1989, which was concretized in 1992 with the establishment of the Singapore Arts Center Co (today's name: The Esplanade Co Ltd). The design of the building complex was created by DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners and presented to the public in 1994 - as was the name Esplanade - Theaters on the Bay , which is derived from the nearby Esplanade Park. The foundation stone was laid on August 11, 1996, the official opening by Singapore's President SR Nathan finally on October 12, 2002. The construction costs amounted to 600 million Singapore dollars .

The Esplanade has had a direct connection to the MRT network since 2010 , when the Circle Line was expanded to include the Esplanade stop .

In addition to the two large halls, the complex includes two other halls for 200 and 250 people, the library @ esplanade , a library specializing in the performing arts, and an open-air stage on the promenade. This complex is to be expanded to include the 550-seat Singtel Waterfront Theater in the immediate vicinity by 2021 . The construction work began on June 18, 2019.

The outer shell of the two main buildings is made of glass, which in turn is covered with over 7000 aluminum plates that serve as sun protection. As a result, plenty of daylight falls into the building and, at the same time, direct sunlight and thus heat generation is avoided. The aluminum plates give the esplanade its special shape, which in turn led to its nickname "Durian" - the stink fruit popular in Southeast Asia , also known there as the "King of Fruits".

Trivia

The country's 5-cent coin, which has been in circulation since 2013 (third series), adorns the esplanade.
