Espostoa frutescens is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet frutescens means 'growing like a bush'.

description

Espostoa frutescens grows shrubby with shoots branching out from the base and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. A tribe is not trained. The upright shoots reach a length of 0.5 to 2 meters with a diameter of 6 to 10 centimeters. There are 22 to 28 low, rounded ribs on which there are elliptical, light brown woolly and closely spaced areoles . The up to 40 and more thorns are light yellow, needle-like, twisting, spread out and have a length of 4 to 8 millimeters. Occasionally a single 1 to 2.5 centimeter long central spine is formed. The 20 to 50 centimeter long cephalium includes five to seven ribs and consists of light brown wool up to 3 centimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers are 4 to 4.5 centimeters long and 3.5 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The top-shaped, green fruits have a length of 1.6 to 2 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa frutescens is common in Ecuador in the provinces of Loja , El Oro and Azuay at altitudes of 500 to 2000 meters.

It was first described in 1989 by Jens E. Madsen .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
