Espostoopsis dybowskii is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Espostoopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the botanist and agricultural scientist Jean Dybowski (1856–1928).

description

The bushy Espostoopsis dybowskii , mostly branching from the bottom , reaches heights of 2 to 4 meters. Their cylindrical trunks, up to 8 centimeters in diameter, are completely covered by white hair . The 20 to 28 ribs are low. The areoles are covered with dull, yellowish wool and abundant white hair. The 2 to 3 protruding, needle-like central spines are yellow and 2 to 3 centimeters long. The numerous, short and thin radial spines are hidden in the hairs of the areoles. The cephalium arises laterally and has a length of up to 60 centimeters.

The flowers , up to 4 centimeters long, open at night. They are white and short tubular to bell-shaped. The flower cup is bare, the flower tube has very small scales. The almost bare, pale pink fruits with persistent, blackish remnants of flowers, are broadly egg-shaped and have a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters. They contain a white pulp and do not tear open. The black, roughened warty seeds are oval to pear-shaped.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Espostoopsis dybowskii is distributed in the north of the Brazilian state of Bahia at altitudes of 300 to 750 meters. The genus was first described in 1968 by Franz Buxbaum . Its only species was described for the first time in 1909 by Robert Roland-Gosselin as Cereus dybowskii . By recombining in different genera there are numerous synonyms for the species. A synonym of the genus is Gerocephalus F.Ritter .

Espostoopsis was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. classified as endangered. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
