The Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG was a mining company in the Ruhr mining industry . It was founded in 1906. It was created as a merger of various unions, including Rheinische Anthracit-Kohlenwerke and Heisinger Tiefbau .

In 1907 the company had the Gottfried Wilhelm shaft sunk , which was put into operation in 1909. In 1908 she acquired the Prinz Friedrich colliery and the Gilles Antoine colliery . When Carl Funke died in 1912, Ernst Tengelmann took over the management. In 1916 the Dorstfeld union in Dortmund was acquired, and in 1920 the Oespel union. In the meantime, it was part of the GBAG and was spun off again in 1933 as a new subsidiary under the name Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG. In 1936 Friedrich Flick joined the group.

After the Second World War, the Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG was separated from the Flick Group. In 1955 the Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG was taken over by Mannesmann AG , and from 1964 the former Bergrat Werner Hoevels was chairman of the board. The administration building at Rüttenscheider Strasse 1/3 in Essen was planned and built from 1956 to 1960, the architect was Egon Eiermann .
