Essex is the administrative seat of Essex County in southeastern Ontario in Canada with about 19,600 (as of 2011) inhabitants.

Essex is about 25 km southeast of Detroit . It is approx. 20 km to Lake St. Clair in the north and Lake Erie in the south.

As a station on the Talbot Trail , Essex grew significantly in the last half of the 19th century and achieved city status in 1890. Essex was formed on April 1, 1999 by the merger of the parishes of Essex, Harrow and Colchester (North Colchester and South Colchester ) created. The entire community consists of the communities

Events
Improper storage of nitroglycerin resulted in a devastating explosion at Essex Railway Station (Michigan Central Station) on August 10, 1907, the shock waves of which were felt in some parts of Michigan . At 9:50 a.m., a car carrying 5,000 pounds of nitroglycerin exploded. The rubble of the station flew up to 600 meters. There were two deaths, numerous injuries and property damage of about $ 250,000.
