The Esso Reeperbahn gas station , also known as the Kieztanke , was a cult object in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli . It was located in the Esso-Häuser building complex at Taubenstrasse 24, was on the one hand a gas station and on the other hand a meeting point, pub , supermarket , sight and tourist attraction. On December 15, 2013, the gas station and the entire area were cleared due to the risk of collapse.

history

The petrol station was built on the Reeperbahn in 1949 and moved to Taubenstraße in 1961. The associated parking garage was a former air raid shelter , which was built between 1940 and 1942 as a two-story underground bunker with seats for 5,000 people. During wartime, between 10,000 and 20,000 people are said to have sought protection from the bombing there. Since 1949, the former bunker of the Reeperbahn garages has been operated as an underground car park with around 430 parking spaces.

The petrol station was open 365 days a year, employed around 50 people and, in addition to the petrol station range, offered a shop with a bakery , an ATM , the aforementioned parking garage with 200 spaces and a car wash , which was considered the first in post-war Germany. On weekends, especially at night, the rush was so great that the petrol station shop had to be secured with doormen. The last managing director of the petrol station, which operated as Reeperbahn Garagen P2 GmbH , was Jürgen Schütze, who was also the owner of the area until May 1, 2009. The Kieztanke was also known through documentaries and depicted by contemporary painters.

In 2009 the previous owner Jürgen Schütze sold the area with the now dilapidated buildings to Bayerische Hausbau . The company planned to demolish the petrol station and the apartment blocks in 2014. Independently of this, Bayerische Hausbau GmbH & Co KG had already assessed the operation of the petrol station as uneconomical when it was bought. On the night of December 15, 2013, all buildings on the property were evacuated due to the risk of collapse. The Esso petrol station also had to close its doors after the night of the evacuation due to the imminent danger of collapse of the complex.

On February 12, 2014, the gas station began being demolished.
