The Essu manor was first mentioned in a document in 1496. From 1402 at the latest it belonged to the noble Baltic German family Wrangel (also Wrangell ) for three and a half centuries .

In the middle of the 18th century, Essu came into the possession of the Krusenstern family . In the 19th century it belonged to the Dellingshausen families and then to the Ungern-Sternberg families . The last owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was Julie Baroness Ungern-Sternberg.

In the 1820s and 1830s, the single-storey mansion was built in the classical style . In 1894 the architect Friedrich Modi redesigned it in the style of historicism . A four hundred meter long avenue leads to the manor house.

Most of the outbuildings date from the 19th century. This includes the administrator's house, a schnapps distillery and several warehouses. The estate also has an eight-hectare park.

In 1974 Essu was converted into a collective farm center with a leisure club and canteen. In 1978 the mansion was extended by an extension.

The manor house has been privately owned as a guest and conference center since 1995.
