The Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte , the capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais , was built between 1947 and 1950 and opened on June 25, 1950. The first game in the new stadium on the occasion of in Brazil held 1950 FIFA World Cup was built, rose in the World Cup between Yugoslavia and Switzerland (3: 0). Yugoslav striker Kosta Tomašević scored the first goal in the new stadium in front of 8,000 spectators at the Estádio Independência . Two more World Cup games were played in Belo Horizonte's largest stadium at the time. In addition to a befitting 8-0 win by Uruguay against Bolivia , the legendary 1-0 victory of the United States against England , the mother country of football, which went down in the annals of football as the miracle of Belo Horizonte , took place in the Estádio Independência. The game attracted 10,000 spectators, which means that the stadium, like the other two World Cup games in Belo Horizonte, was by no means sold out, at the time of the World Cup it had 25,000 spectators.

The capacity has decreased over the years. In 2009, before the stadium was closed to build a new stadium on the grounds of the Estádio Independência, it was 18,900 seats. Since 1999 there were plans in the vicinity of América Mineiro to expand the stadium to a capacity of 30,000 spectators, but these were never realized due to the second class of the club. The record crowd in the stadium was reached when on January 27, 1963 32,721 people saw the final of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Seleções Estaduais between Minas Gerais and Guanabara , which was won 1-0 by the selection of Minas Gerais.

Since the opening of the Estádio Independência in 1950, América Mineiro has been using the stadium for its home games. The club has won the state championship of Minas Gerais fifteen times , with eleven of these title wins before 1950, as before the time of Independência. Other important stadiums in Belo Horizonte are the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto , called Mineirão , and the Arena do Jacare .
