Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz , often just Comandante Ferraz , is a Brazilian research station in the Antarctic . It is located on the Keller Peninsula in Admiralty Bay off King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . Your predecessor was the British station G . It was transported to the island by the research ship Barão de Teffé and began operating on February 6, 1984. The station is named in honor of the Brazilian Antarctic pioneer Luís Antônio de Carvalho Ferraz . On February 25, 2012, it was completely destroyed after an explosion in the generator room and the resulting major fire. Two members of the Brazilian Navy died in the fire.

The base

The station was initially assembled from eight corrugated iron containers, each 37.5 m³ in size , which offered a total of twelve people. The base was later expanded with additional modules . It occupies an area of ​​approximately 2600 m². By 2004, 60 rooms were set up in which 46 people were accommodated. The station resembles a small town in the middle of the Antarctic ice . There are storage rooms, workshops, a library, living and recreation rooms, a hospital, communication facilities, a sports hall as well as a canteen and dining room. There is a helipad near the station .

The base was manned all year round; Operation was around the clock. The Brazilian Navy is responsible for managing the base. Military personnel are constantly stationed on the base and are changed regularly.
