The Estación de Desamparados is a historic train station in Lima ( Peru ). It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Palacio de Gobierno del Perú (government palace) in the Centro Histórico (historic city center) of Lima.

History and architecture

The station was named after the former Jesuit convent Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados . The construction project began in 1890 and was financed by the Peruvian company Corporación Peruana de Londres . The inauguration took place three years later on the Lima- La Oroya railway line . The line became known as Ferrocarril Central Andino .

The three-story building of the station was the first public work by the Peruvian architect Rafael Marquina in the style of Beaux Arts architecture . He used modern materials and techniques such as reinforced concrete and expanded metal for this building . The main facade is symmetrical and consists of five vertical bodies divided by four pilasters of classic design. A special feature is the stained glass of the interior skylights in Art Nouveau style .

Today the station is mainly used as an exhibition hall and since 2003, between April and November twice a month, when the old route is used by a tourist train, as a stop for taking photos. In the “Desamparados” station there is a museum showing ethnic exhibitions and the Casa de la Literatura Peruana .
