history

The Estadio Guillermo Soto Rosa in Mérida , with more than two hundred thousand inhabitants the largest city and also the capital of the state of the same name in western Venezuela , was built in 1969 and opened on September 5th of the same year. When the Estudiantes de Mérida football club was founded two years later , the Estadio Guillermo Soto Rosa, named after Guillermo Soto Rosa, a football player from Mérida, became the club's home stadium. From 1971 to 2005 Estudiantes now played its home games here. On the occasion of the Copa América 2007 , which Venezuela had secured, a larger stadium was built in Mérida, the Estadio Metropolitano de Mérida . In 2005, Estudiantes de Mérida, himself a two-time Venezuelan football champion, moved to the new 42,200-seat stadium.

Thus only the other important club from Mérida, Universidad de Los Andes FC , played in the Estadio Guillermo Soto Rosa. ULA FC was founded in 1977 and has won the Venezuelan championship twice and the national cup once. Currently, the club plays in the third division Segunda División B, after having played in the lower leagues of Venezuelan football for a few years due to a re-establishment.
