The Estadio Municipal de Pasarón is a football stadium in the Spanish city of Pontevedra . It serves as the home of the FC Pontevedra club .

history

Teams from Pontevedra have played on the grounds of today's Estadio de Pasarón since the 1920s. When FC Pontevedra was founded in 1941, they took over the venue from their predecessor, Eiriña Club de Fútbol . In 1960 the municipality bought the land that had been owned by the family of the famous Galician writer Valentín Paz-Andrade and began to build the stadium. The venue was designed by Emilio Quiroga Losada and Alfonso Barreiro Buján and it opened in 1965. A tragic event took place on January 7, 1973 in the Estadio Pasarón when Sevilla FC player Pedro Berruezo during a league match between his team and FC Pontevedra a cardiac arrest succumbed.

In 2005, a comprehensive renovation of the stadium, led by the architect Galo Zayas Carvajal , began. In the following five years, all four grandstands of the venue were completely renewed one after the other without having to stop playing. Since then, the stadium has been unified and all the stands are covered. However, the capacity was reduced from 16,500 to around 12,500 seats. The construction project was often in the headlines because of the cost explosion, as the originally planned budget more than doubled from 7.2 million euros. The renovated stadium was officially inaugurated on May 15, 2010 with a game against Real Oviedo .
