Estevesia is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the Brazilian cactus researcher Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939). The type species of the so far monotypical genus is Estevesia alex-bragae .

description

The so far only species Estevesia alex-bragae grows weakly branched, shrubby, upright, weakly branched from the base. The blue-green shoots are up to 3 cm thick and hardly higher than 50 cm. The narrow cylindrical shoots have 7-10 blunt ribs. The areoles are woolly and have up to 40, fine needle-like, yellowish thorns . The flowers open for only one night. They are more likely to be formed in the upper section of the shoot. They are up to 17 centimeters long and are slender funnel-shaped. The pericarpel and the flower tube are greenish and covered with areoles and thorns. The bracts are wide spread, white. The berries are yellow, ovate to oblong and thorny. The flesh is juicy. The remnants of the flowers stick. The large, humped seeds are black.

Distribution and systematics

The genus Estevesia is common in central Brazil . The species settles on the edge of rocks in the Campo Cerrado, which is subject to severe pressure from the approaching soy plantations. In this respect, the species and genus may be on the verge of extinction. It was first described as a monotypical genus in 2009 by Pierre J. Braun . The related classification of the genus Estevesia is still very unclear. There is a proximity to Cereus , but possibly also Harrisia .

The type species of the genus is Estevesia alex-bragae PJBraun & Esteves 2009.
