Esther Chajut ( Hebrew אֶסְתֵּר חַיּוּת; * October 16, 1953 in Herzliya ) is an Israeli lawyer. She has been President of the Israeli Supreme Court since 2017 .

Career

Chajut is the daughter of Romanian survivor of the Holocaust . During her time doing military service for the Israel Defense Forces , she served in the military music unit. After completing her military service, Hayut attended Tel Aviv University Law School , graduating in 1977. From then on she worked as a lawyer until she was appointed a magistrate judge in Tel Aviv in 1990. In March 2003 she was appointed as a judge at the Supreme Court by President Moshe Katzav . In 2017 she succeeded Miriam Naor as chief judge.
