Yitzchak Olshan ( Hebrew יצחק אולשן; born February 19, 1895 in Kaunas , Russian Empire ; died February 5, 1983 ) was an Israeli lawyer. Between 1954 and 1965 he was the second president of the Israeli Supreme Court .

Career

Jitzchak Olshan was born in Kaunas in present-day Lithuania in 1895 . In 1912 Olshan emigrated to Palestine , which was then part of the Ottoman Empire . Between 1918 and 1921 he was a member of the Jewish Legion . 1923 traveled Olshan to London at the University of London to study and returned four years later with a degree in Law to Israel, where he worked as a lawyer.

With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Yitzchak Olshan was appointed one of the first five judges of the Israeli Supreme Court and in 1954 the second president after Moses Smoira . During his tenure, he repeatedly stressed that the state is bound by the rule of law just like every individual and that respect for the rule of law is one of the foundations of a democratic society. Olshan retired in 1965 at the age of 70 and died in 1983 a few days before his 88th birthday.

Olshan had a son named Yoram who was killed while serving in the army in 1973.
