Esther Eppstein (born August 14, 1967 in Zurich ) is a Swiss artist , art host and publisher . She has received several awards for her mediation work in the Offspace message salon .

Life

Esther Eppstein grew up in Zurich. When her father Paul (1917-2001), of Polish-Russian descent, was naturalized , the family name Epstein was changed to Eppstein due to an official error. Her mother Pierrette Eppstein (1936–1998) was a graphic artist . Her younger sister is the actress and theater educator Golda Eppstein. From 1988 to 1991 she attended the graphic arts class at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts (today Lucerne School of Art and Design ) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw .

Esther Eppstein was married to Meinrad Arnold from 1994 to 2011. The couple has a son (Moritz, born 1992) and a daughter (Maria, born 1994).

After her father's death, Esther Eppstein became increasingly interested in her Jewish roots. She is involved with Omanut, the association for the promotion of Jewish art in Switzerland, and shows works that thematize being Jewish, such as the DNA project by the artist Marina Belobrovaja .

Based on her own understanding of the expanded concept of art, Eppstein developed a work that was shaped by the do-it-yourself idea of the punk movement. With her main work, the message salon , she creates a place of which she herself is a necessary part, be it in her function as a hostess, exhibiting artist, mediator, saleswoman, barmaid, recorder or master of ceremonies. Right from the start, after it was founded in 1996, the message salon has become a meeting point and starting point for young art and the related subculture in Zurich. An open community forms around this art location, Eppstein's extended family, which has grown over the years and developed further together.

Documenting the exhibitions and their visitors with the analog camera is part of Esther Eppstein's artistic practice. She creates a photo album for each exhibition. This photo collection is one of the rare tangible art goods that Eppstein produces.

From 1995 to 1998 Esther Eppstein worked as a duo with the artist Selina Trepp as Treppstein in the fields of video, performance and music.

In 2009, Esther Eppstein was acquitted of the charge of pornography at the Zurich District Court after she had projected a sexually more or less explicit series of pictures on the outer facade of the message salon on Zurich's Langstrasse as part of an exhibition by the Czech-American artist Petr Motycka . Eppstein deals in her exhibition “Projections” - a résumé in detail with the court case.

Since 2011, Esther Eppstein has published individual issues by international artists under the title message salon Zines .
