Esther Voorhees Hasson

Esther Voorhees Hasson (born September 20, 1867 in Baltimore , Maryland , † March 8, 1942 in Washington, DC ) was the first superintendent of the United States Navy Nurse Corps . Before and after serving in the Navy Nurse Corps, she was a US Army nurse .

Career

Esther Voorhees Hasson trained as a nurse at the Connecticut Training School for Nurses in New Haven , Connecticut , which she graduated in 1897. In June 1898 she was contracted by the US Army as a nurse during the Spanish-American War and served on the hospital ship Relief and in the Philippines . In 1901 she left the army and worked in Panama from 1905 to 1907 .

When the US Navy Nurse Corps was established, Hasson took her oath of office on August 18, 1908, as the corps' first superintendent. Under her leadership, 19 additional nurses were recruited and prepared for service in the Navy. By January 1911, by the time Hasson left, the number had grown to 81. Her successor as superintendent was Lenah Higbee .

In June 1917, Hasson became a reserve nurse in the US Navy and served in Europe after the United States entered the First World War . She was chief nurse of two army bases. In June 1919 she finally retired.

Tasks as superintendent

As the first superintendent of the United States Navy Nurse Corps , Esther Hasson's job was to recruit qualified nurses and ensure the training of the nurses who were accepted. In addition, there was the organizational administration of the corps. The first 19 nurses selected from 33 applicants became known as "Sacred Twenty" .
