Esther Perel (* 1958 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian psychotherapist of Polish-Jewish descent who explores the tension between the need for security (love, belonging and closeness) and the need for freedom (erotic desire, adventure and distance) in human relationships.

Life

Perel promoted the concept of erotic intelligence in her 2006 book Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence, which has been translated into 24 languages. After the book was published, she became an international consultant on sex and relationships. Perel gave a TED lecture in February 2013 entitled The secret to desire in a long-term relationship , and in March 2015 another one entitled Rethinking infidelity ... a talk for anyone who has ever loved .

Perel is hosting the Where Should We Begin? Podcast which takes place in her office as she observes anonymous couples seeking insights into issues such as infidelity, lack of sex, and grief.

In 2016, Perel was included on Oprah Winfrey's Supersoul 100 list of Visionaries and Influential Leaders.
