The key passage towards the end of the speech reads:

“In this temple of the United Nations we are the guardians of an ideal, we are the guardians of a conscience. Given the great responsibility and honor we have, we must make peaceful disarmament the top priority.

And it is an old country, France, an old continent like mine, Europe, which is telling you this today, a country that has seen wars, occupation and barbarism. A country that does not forget and knows everything it owes to the fighters for freedom from America and elsewhere. And that has always stood firm in front of history and people. True to its values, it wishes to act decisively with all members of the international community. It believes in building a better world together. "

Villepin received applause and worldwide attention for his speech - unusual in this place.

With Operation Iraqi Freedom in a “ coalition of the willing ” led by the United States , however , the Iraq war began only a few weeks later on the night of March 19-20 with targeted bombings on Baghdad .
