Ethical tourism

As ethical tourism refers to a type of tourism , in consideration of the culture and customs of the travel site is taken.

Guidelines

Ethical tourism was defined in the 1999 Global Code of Ethics for Tourism . This code was drawn up by UNWTO , the tourism authority of the UN , and comprises 10 articles, which are aimed at the hotel and hospitality industry, travel destinations and governments, tour operators and travel agencies, employees and travelers. The content of the individual articles can be summarized as follows:

  1. Article: Tourism should help to increase respect and understanding between the peoples of the earth and their inhabitants. This means that both the host and the tourist have to accept each other's culture
  2. Article: Tourism should promote tolerance , equality and respect and offer travelers the opportunity to develop their personality and broaden their own horizons.
  3. Article: Tourism should promote sustainable development , not destroy nature
  4. Article: The legacy of humanity should be promoted through tourism.
  5. Article: The host country should benefit from tourism through new jobs and social, cultural and economic growth.
  6. Article: The actors in the tourism industry have duties and must fulfill them. For example, tourism professionals must inform travelers about their travel destination, the government of a state must warn citizens and tourists of a dangerous situation, and the press must report honestly and not manipulatively about the travel destination
  7. Article: A person has a right to tourism
  8. Article: Tourists should enjoy freedom of movement in accordance with national law.
  9. Article: The basic rights of workers in the industry must be guaranteed.
  10. Article: Public and private actors in tourism development must respect and follow these principles.

aims

Ethical tourism wants to show tourists how, both negatively and positively, they can change the country they are visiting with their economic power. In addition, this "power" should be used to help developing countries in terms of environmental protection , social welfare , human rights and animal welfare . In addition, more ethical travel is to be offered and given more prominence by travel agencies and portals.

World Committee on Tourism Ethics

The World Committee on Tourism Ethics was established in 2004 to oversee the implementation of the Code of Ethics for Tourism. The World Committee is made up of envoys from the member states of the UNWTO and ambassadors from the groups represented by the UNWTO: the private sector, workers' associations and non-governmental organizations.

Ethical Traveler

Earth Island Institution , a non-profit organization, founded the Ethical Traveler project, which is dedicated to ethical tourism. To this end, Ethical Travelers publishes a list of 10 developing countries each year , selected according to the following main criteria:
