The Chittagong Ethnological Museum ( Bengali জাতিতাত্ত্বিক জাদুঘর ) is the only ethnological museum in Bangladesh . It is located in the Agrabad district of Chittagong . It is considered a museum with unexploited potential and needs renovation.

history

The museum was founded in the 1960s but didn't officially open until 1974. The establishment took place under the direction of the state authority for archeology in Bangladesh. The aim of the museum was to promote a better mutual understanding of the different ethnic groups in Bangladesh and in this way to contribute to a more cooperative coexistence. It is also a place for ethnological studies. The museum was expanded by two rooms until 1995, and in 1996 another exhibition room was added, which focuses on exhibits from Bangla- speaking ethnic groups.

In eleven exhibition rooms, the museum shows exhibits that reflect not only the past but also the current life of the twelve in the area of the Chittagong district and the 29 indigenous groups living in Bangladesh . In addition to classic ethnological exhibits such as weapons, vases, musical instruments, woven goods, clothing and furniture, the museum also shows dioramas , maps and photos. In addition to the exhibits of the Bangladeshi ethnic groups, exhibits from 11 other ethnic groups from India, Pakistan, Australia and Kyrgyzstan are shown.

Four of the exhibition rooms and the entrance hall are dedicated to objects from the Chakma , Marma , Tripura, Bom, Monipuri, Santal , and Garo .

The museum is located on an area of ​​around 5000 square meters.
